My word for 2019 is...

Play big. Yes, I know that’s two words.

But they encapsulate so perfectly the energy I’m bringing into the new year, and the rest of my life.

I’ve never been one for gambling. I’ve never quite understood the appeal of risking money for a possible reward, something that wasn’t guaranteed. Over the years, I’ve been known to play small and play it safe when it comes to new opportunities and chasing after my dreams. My mentality was always “it’s not the right time” or “maybe when I’m better prepared”. Something inside of me always held back when it came to the big, important changes that deep down, I knew I needed to take.

And as I was doing some end of the year reading and reflecting, thinking about what I wanted to experience in the new year and what I wanted to change in my life, I stumbled across this gem from Auntie Oprah:

As always, Oprah is right. I do want to live out the truest, highest expression of myself. But what will it take to get there?

Many of us are creatures of comfort. I think oftentimes, lots of us know we need to take the next step or pivot and change directions completely, but the simple prospect of discomfort freezes us and we hold back and don’t initiate any change at all. We simply wait for it to take a hold of us and react accordingly. We play small, hoping that we can win big with minimal disruptions or inconveniences.

But what would it look like for us to start stepping out on faith, into the unknown? What would it look like it we not only seized the opportunities that came our way, but went out in search of those opportunities? What would it feel like to take a chance on becoming our truest, highest selves?

In 2019, let’s play big, and win big, too. Happy New Year to us!
